I always wondered why Japan never did a Jem anime since Magical Girl animes are really popular. They could do it like Mermaid Melody and have the Holograms defeat a different band every episode that are signed to Misfits Music, and the Misfits are like the ultimate band that eventually battle the Holograms after the other bands lose. Oh and Jerrica can't tell anyone that she is Jem or else she will lose her voice lol that wouldn't be anything like Jem but I would watch it anyway

Maybe the question of "why Jem was never released in Japan"/"why they haven't made her into an anime" is just that. Jem IS our Western version of "magical idol singer", so while she seems so unique to us, she'd just be one more version of the same thing over there (though she's still unique enough that I bet they'd eat it up). Also, if you wonder how she *hasn't* made it over there, all I can say is I saw one of my favorite anime, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, long before I saw Jem -- then I saw Jem and kept shaking my head and laughing... lacustrine-duet.tumblr.com/post/146817303421/for-the-jemandtheholograms-gang-while-i-trulyAnd doing spit-takes. (SEED is part of the reason why I love Jem as much as I do.)

The other thing is, while watching the bonus disk for the series I couldn't help but notice the storyboard director say that a) they had to give Toei some gentle direction so that Jem didn't end up looking totally like an anime character , but also b) that he was majorly inspired by the openings and endings for Urusei Yatsura, the first animated things he'd seen where the animation was on-beat and the lyrics actually described what you saw. Talk about your vintage (awesome) anime! Outrageous! (And I have no idea how he would have seen UY in 1984-5, so I guess it's perfectly possible that people making shows over there have seen Jem at some point.)

I love Urusei Yatsura.
Have you checked out Artzie Music? It is a music channel on YouTube that is dedicated to Future Funk. Lots of the GIFs for the songs they post are from vintage anime. YouTube.com/ArtzieMusic

I know of Mobile Suit Gundam but I have never seen it. That's pretty cool that they have a Jem influenced character. I'll check it out sometime. I love Urusei Yatsura. (That one's from 1979.) (There's a very small coincidental thing between Rio's 1979 yellow turtleneck in Out of the Past and the original Gundam. That's all.) SEED is a Gundam series from 2002 in a totally different universe. With very different animation. It is cool, though. They have three Jem-influenced characters! (And it's very, very funny, in-between how dark and serious the show is.)

Gotcha. I've heard of it but I'm not sure if it was the original or SEED.

The video looks amazing and it's so cool how the people who created that Candy Crush video made the characters look similar to the Jem and the Holograms characters.
