Just kind of curious on how everyone began with Jem...... Did it start with the cartoon? the dolls? Do you remember your first doll?
For me it was the dolls then the cartoon, Pizzazz was actually my first doll my mom bought for me (sorry, Jem). It wasn't until years later when I found the ones I had as a kid that my interest was renewed. I started recollecting the original versions and now the IT.

With me, it started at the end of June 1986, when I got the first-year Jem (plus the bonus tape with the songs from Starbright Part 1) as a 6th-grade graduation present. We didn't have Super Saturday in our area, so I didn't get to see the show until that fall when we got the whole series. And once we did, I was an instant fan. I only managed to get seven characters new during the original run, plus the stage - which I got as a junior-high graduation present (yes, there were still a few Jem things floating around in our area in the summer of 1989). After that, I would check second-hand stores for anything I'd missed, and I taped the show when it was rerun on YTV in the early 1990s. But what really rekindled my fandom was a web-design workshop I was taking in the spring of 2001. While looking for sites for inspiration, I Googled "Jem" on a whim and found Universal Appeal (now known as Rock Jem) and the original Jem & Friends board (ancestor to Jemcon and this board). I filled in some of the gaps in my collection, and when the Integrity versions came out, I started collecting them.

In July 2011, I found myself surfing the guide while watching the Hub Network, and then came across this program called "Jem and The Holograms" and I was like "I have never heard of this before..." the episode was "The Jem Jam, Part 1" so it got me thinking that this show is about jelly and jam! After recording it and eventually watching it, I fell in love with whatever this awesomeness appeared to be at the time. I looked it up online (the first fansite I ever visited was RockJem) and then found out that it was a doll line in the 80s!! I started getting into 80s music, and everything 80s because of Jem! And the best part is, my 11th birthday that year brought me a Jem cake, my first Jem doll (2nd Kimber), and THE COMPLETE SERIES!!!! OMG, I was so ecstatic... In 2012, I was collecting Jem dolls like crazy over the summer, scrolling eBay endlessly. And plus, I got more Jem stuff that year: the Rockin Roadster, the Rock Backstager, Rio and GNG Jem and GNG Rio all NRFB, the Star Stage, and that year basically gave me everything I needed for my lifelong Jem obsession!! 2013 came, and that meant MY FIRST JEMCON! TBH, 2013 was my most favorite year EVER, in terms of my actual life. 2014 was even more JemCon madness (Samantha Newark and Christy Marx? OMG!!!), and 2015 was another JemCon and totally outrageous (though I got into Steven Universe around that October and I felt that some of my attention to Jem went more to SU, and that is not what I wanted). After all this time, Jem is still my life and it will always be a part of me FOREVER!!!!!! (let's just speed up the official Jem news and announcements more, OK?)

I love reading stories like this!
As for the show itself, I also saw it for the first time on the HUB (August 5, 2011 according to my tumblr post about it). It was the 'Alone Again' episode and wow, what a bizarre experience that was lol and after that I made sure to dvr it whenever it came on.
prior to that I only knew about the dolls since my mom and aunt have childhood pictures with them, but 2011 is when I got ~obsessed~ I already had a love for the 80s, so loving Jem fit right in!
My first doll was IT Pizzazz. I don't have any plans to collect any of the vintage dolls, but I know I would have loved them if I was a kid in the 80s.
Hope to see more stories posted here!

Great stories you all! :-D
Like many other boys growing up in the mid-80s, I watched a lot of cartoons like Transformers and G.I.Joe, and Jem often came on around the same time. Jem was always different than a lot of the other "girls'" cartoons in that they didn't just pander to little girls for pandering's sake. It was a fun, action-filled adventure with one of the catchiest theme songs and music of the era. And in my 8 year old mind, it was an extension of the Transformers/G.I.Joe Sunbow universe. Really it is no wonder so many boys from that decade still have fond memories of Jem, even if they don't exactly consider themselves fans of the franchise, so to speak.
I actually kinda forgot exactly which doll I got first, even though it was not too long ago. It was either a sealed vintage original Jem/Jerrica, or it was Hollywood Jem from SDCC. I got them close to around the same time, if I remember correctly.
I have since acquired most of the vintage dolls new in boxes, both Rockin' Roadsters, the Star Stage, and Rock Backstager. Also most of the story books and a few VHS tapes. And of course the Shout Factor DVD set and the Rhino DVD sets as well (which I believe were the first Jem items I ever got).
Now in this Modern Era I have managed to stay on top of collecting all the IT dolls so far and intend to keep up with them!

And in my 8 year old mind, it was an extension of the Transformers/G.I.Joe Sunbow universe. The writers and artists seem to have, if not thought so, then at least dropped hints. But even without those little hints here and there, the similar art style in all of them makes it easy to think of them as connected.

Anyone familiar with the character Hector Ramirez? He appeared in all 3 Sunbow cartoons!

He's got a mustache or something. In the episode "One Jem Too Many" Hector was on TV reporting at a movie premiere where Clash (impersonating Jem) dunked a bucket of popcorn onto Flint Westwood's head.

I forgot all about Hector Ramirez! Oh man, that is awesome! Well, that settles it, then, doesn't it. Confirms what so many of us thought all along. Thanks for the reminder, jemgirl!

I got interested in Jem and the Holograms by watching the cartoon series on Tubi TV and ever since I watched it, I ended up loving the series.
