Hello everyone,
So ever since I could remember, I was always a fan of Jem and the Holograms. I would watch it every time I got home from school when I was about 5 years old. As I got older, I almost forgot about Jem until I saw a video on classic 80s theme songs. Since then, I revisited Jem by buying the complete series, reading the comics, and watching the fan videos that surpass the 2015 Hollywood Motion Picture. Jem and the Holograms became such a big part of my life again that I wanted to contribute something into this beautiful world of female empowerment, sci-fi adventures and incredible fashion and songs. Which brought the thought to my mind: could Jem work as a stage musical?
I'm a recent graduate with a Theatre Arts degree and, with a friend/composer, we decided to adapt Jem and the Holograms as a stage musical. Imagine the world of Jem and the Holograms brought to life on stage, with incredible lighting effects, extravagant costuming, a score of new songs with a blend of pop and punk, all following a great storyline about identity, family and never giving up on dreams. The show would feature Synergy in all her glory, The Misfits wreaking havoc and the Jerrica/Jem/Rio love triangle, but all set to now. So far, my friend and I have outlined the story, the character list, the song list, a draft of Act One and have even talked to Christy Marx (head writer of the TV series) and Kelly Thompson (writer of the comics), both of them giving their support and blessing. But there are some issues that have come to mind: copyright (Hasbro) and the fact that both my friend and I are male.
The goal is to have enough material to present to Hasbro with the possibility of having them help endorse the project. We want the show to be broadened so that all the fans can enjoy it. However, if Hasbro decides that they have no interest in staging a musical of Jem, then my friend and I would would settle promoting the play as a "fan musical", meaning if it were ever performed, we wouldn't charge people to see it, the funding would have to be provided through other means and that this is a show for fans by fans. Now the other thing we're looking for is a female perspective, since we all know that Jem in the hands of men is never a good idea (2015 film) but that doesn't mean we're not capable. We just want to make sure that we're in the right direction and that it is respectful not only to fans but to female empowerment.
So guys, what do you think? Do you think Jem could work as a stage musical? Feel free to respond and if you want to help collaborate in any way, let me know.
